Radio Flyer 40' Hinkley / Little Harbor Whipser Jet
owned by Rod & Barb McKenzie
Radio Flyer is a standout - - - a bright red and very fast-looking cruiser built by premier builder, Hinckley Yachts. She is propelled by twin 440 hp Yanmar diesels coupled to Hamilton Water Jets. Radio Flyer can, when asked, hit a top speed of 38 knots. Owners Rod and Barb McKenzie will reach that destination cove way ahead of the rest of us (cruising speed is 25 knots) and can tuck far back into the shallows with her mere 22 inches of draft – there are no props or even a rudder in the way. She can also be a most well-behaved, maneuverable vessel in a harbor with the Hinckley joy stick steering which controls the jets and a bow thruster when in tight quarters. For reverse, baffles called buckets drop to redirect the thrust forward and can also be used as brakes to stop on a dime from any speed.
A comfortable helm station with all the right stuff. Note the joy stick.
The high, bright bridge deck is a great spot for dining or just relaxing in the sun with the curtains up or down. Notice the teak aft deck, three steps down, and the full-width stern seat.
With plenty of room below – Radio Flyer could actually sleep six but Rod and Barb say they enjoy 8 for drinks, 4 for dinner but prefer just the two of them for overnight. The best bed on board can also be an open lounge area. Radio Flyer carries a full galley and every amenity, including Espar heating/air conditioning. There is a spacious head with a separate shower.
Rod and Barb currently lead a very busy life and Radio Flyer is a perfect refuge for that rare chance to relax. |
