Welcome to the EHYC News!
Welcome to the Eagle Harbor Yacht Club email newsletter. In it you'll find important club news, highlights of past events, information about upcoming cruises and social events, and more.
The newsletter will be published monthly, and it's purpose is to keep you informed about club activities and items of interest to members. In future issues we'll introduce you to new members when they
come on board, perhaps tell you who has a new boat, and remind you of coming events. Read more
Club House Planned for 2011
At the Annual Meeting we announced that EHYC was negotiating with Eagle Harbor Marina for the use of their upstairs meeting room as the EHYC club house. If everything goes as planned, EHYC will share this
space with Bainbridge Island Yacht Club this year. BIYC has enthusiastically endorsed and encouraged this arrangement, and is working closely with us as we finalize the negotiations. Last year we held our First Friday get-togethers jointly with BIYC at the club house and
enjoyed several joint BIYC/EHYC social events there. This year we look forward to hosting many of our own events there as well. We'll have more details for you once arrangements are final.
From The Bridge
by Rick Randall, Commodore
As I said at the annual meeting on January 22, I feel both honored and privileged to assume the role of EHYC Commodore. Outgoing Commodore
Cindy Robinson accomplished a great deal last year, and one could argue that the club today is in the best shape ever. The last 12 months
have seen the start of our popular Friday evening social events, Ladies Lunches, the Diesel & Beer social get-together for guys, four great cruises,
each with a theme, a well-attended Swap Meet, a new relationship with our friends at BIYC, and of course the leasing of the Club House. My goal
for 2011 is to maintain the momentum and excitement Cindy helped to create, while adding some new programs that I hope will attract new
members and help retain our current ones. Read more
Super Bowl Party and Chili Cook off
Sunday February 6 is the Super Bowl, and time to party!! Starts at 3:00pm at the club house--goes until the game is over. This year EHYC is organizing the chili part, and the
competition will be HOT! Bring a pot of your favorite formula to share with the group. If chili is not your specialty, just bring an hors d’oeuvre to share. Prizes, and of course bragging rights, for the best entries.
Drinks provided. $7 donation for adults/$3 for children to cover costs. More information here.
First-Friday Now Third-Friday
Our "First Friday" evening get-togethers at the club house have proven very popular. They're a
great way to unwind at week's end and to relax with fellow club members. This year we are moving these events to the 3rd Friday
of each month, partly to avoid conflicts with the First Friday Art Walks in Winslow. But whatever the dates,
these are sure to be good times -- very informal and fun. Just bring your beverage of choice and perhaps some food
to share. As in the past, our friends at BIYC are encouraged to join us. We usually eat well, but we ALWAYS have a
great time! Hope to see you at the next one on February 18. Starts at 6:00PM. Questions? -- Contact Rick Randall or Cindy Robinson.
Past Commodore Honored
EHYC recognized 2010 Commodore Cindy Robinson's many contributions by awarding her the coveted "Master Roaster" apron at the recent
Annual Meeting. Incoming Commodore Rick Randall made the presentation, and further designated Cindy as our official "Roaster-in-Chief". We look forward
to many more tasty events organized by Cindy, and especially the Port Ludlow Luau this August. Cindy, thanks again for all your hard work!
Four Great Cruises Coming Up
The Cruise Committee, headed by Vice Commodore Nancy McCaughey, has four terrific cruises planned for this year:
- May 20-23: Bremerton
- June 24-26: Port Townsend (The Crab Feed!)
- August 12-14: Port Ludlow, with an extension to Alderbrook on Hood Canal the following week
- September 23-25: Gig Harbor
Rod McKenzie, leader of the popular Port Townsend cruise and crab feed, is already taking reservations for this year, so now would be a
good time to contact Rod to be sure you're on the list -- space is limited and this one will fill up fast. We'll have more details, including cruise themes and names of Cruise Leaders, in next
month's newsletter, but there's no need to wait. Mark your calendars now and plan to join us for the fun!
Yacht Designer Robert Perry to Speak at Commons
Famed yacht design Robert Perry will give a talk at the Bainbridge Commons on February 19. This event is sponsored by Port Madison Yacht Club and is
part of their Salty Speaker series. Pot luck dinner begins at 6:30.
More info here, or contact Tina Ingalls.
Small Stuff...
Small Stuff: n. Any light line or twine used aboard ship... We'll use the "Small Stuff" column to pass on short news items and reminders. We'll try to
include where to go for more information, so be sure to check here in each month's newsletter.
Name Tags...Those of you who attended the Annual Meeting have received your
new name tags. Folks who attended one of last year's cruises but did not attend the Annual Meeting will get theirs in the mail. Other members will receive their tags when they
sign up for or attend a future EHYC cruise or social event. Your EHYC dues cover 2 tags per family; additional tags are $10 each--contact Rick Randall. So don't wait ... participate!
EHYC Caps & Visors... Our new embroidered caps and visors have arrived and are available from Secretary Sandra Leese. Caps are $20 and are available in several colors;
visors are $15 only in hot pink (yes, its true). Get your new EHYC cap or visor and be in style this season!
Small pouch found at Annual Meeting... A small cloth pouch was found on a window sill after the Annual Meeting at Seabold Hall. It is black and measures about 4x8 inches. Contact
Rick Randall (360-536-2995).
Newsletter (continued)...This first issue is still a little experimental, so if you have difficulty displaying it correctly in your email system, please let me know, either by email (a link is in the right
side-bar) or by phone (360-536-2995). I'll do my best to patch things up and improve as we go along. Also, if you have ideas for news articles or other content, please pass those along to me as well. Thanks! -- Rick Randall, editor.
From the Bridge (continued)... Last year we made a good start on expanding our social programs, and my hope is to see further
expansion until they are on a par with our very successful cruises. I intend to work closely with the Social Committee early this year to plan several
new social events. In addition I will chair a new
committee to organize quarterly evening or weekend programs focusing on boating education, marine history, environmental issues, cruising adventures,
or other themes that may appeal to our members. Future newsletters will bring you more information about social activities and programs as they
take shape. We will, of course, continue to build and promote our cruises. These have been the main focus of the club over the years, and we do them
very well. This year we are continuing with the concept of themes for each cruise, and are encouraging Cruise Leaders to assemble a small team (their Cruise Crew),
not only to help spread the work load but also to encourage more members to participate in future cruise leadership.
So that's a quick view from the bridge on a
rather dark and dreary January afternoon. With the prospect of longer and warmer days ahead, I look forward
to working with all of you to make 2011 another great year.
